Improvements to permitting, siting and export approvals will help cut global emissions, support allies and global energy security

WASHINGTON – The Western States and Tribal Nations (WSTN) Natural Gas Initiative, a bipartisan organization led by states and sovereign tribal nations to advocate for Western natural gas exports, today urged House of Representatives leadership to support the Unlocking our Domestic LNG Potential Act of 2023 (H.R. 1130), legislation that will help boost American LNG exports by making critical changes to export approval process and simplify siting and permitting for LNG export facilities, the permitting process, reduce costs and expedite U.S. LNG exports to our global allies.

“As global demand for clean energy supplies soar, America has the resources to meet domestic demand, the demand from European allies reliant on Russian gas before the Ukraine war, and the growing, urgent demand to backfill Asia’s needs post-Ukraine and into the next two decades,” Western States and Tribal Nations Natural Gas Initiative President Andrew Browning said. “H.R. 1130 will create flexibility to produce in line with market expectations and bolster our ability to meet global demand efficiently by eliminating duplication in the permitting process, thereby promoting the investments needed to build an increasingly cleaner, more secure global LNG market.”

“Every molecule of American LNG that can reach Asia and other foreign shores can replace higher-emitting fuels for power generation. This formula reduced America’s emissions for two decades and it can do the same for Asia and the world at large,” Browning said. “Our Rockies basins natural gas lifecycle study found that LNG exported from the North America’s Pacific Coast to China, India, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan would create net life cycle emissions reductions of between 42%-55% if used to replace coal-fired power generation.”

“WSTN strongly supports H.R. 1130 and urges Congress to pass this legislation. America is now the world’s largest LNG exporter, and none of that record outflow of natural gas has hurt domestic supply. It’s time to put our LNG resources to work abroad for a cleaner environment and a more secure global LNG market,” Browning said.
